9 to 5 is 8 hours: 09:00 to 17:00, five days a week, 40 hours in total. If lunch is unpaid, it is 7.5 hours with a 30-minute break and 7 hours with a 60-minute break.

Nine to five is the shorthand for a standard working day: eight hours at work, five days a week, forty hours in total. In the United States the forty-hour week was written into law by the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938, and the phrase has since become the general name for regular office hours in English.
Strictly speaking, nine to five is eight hours only where the lunch break is paid. Where it is unpaid, the same clock hours usually amount to seven or seven and a half hours of paid time — worth checking before you compare two offers by their hours alone.
The web countdown measures the clock hours you set, from start to finish. If you want it to reflect paid time only, set the end time an hour earlier on the home page. It will not build a week of mixed days; that belongs in the iOS app.
